Library customers are being asked to have their say on the future of the county’s library service – and F.O.LK. hope that customers who use and value Lakenheath Library will help show how much they value our village library.
At the end of 2016, Suffolk Libraries’ Board voted unanimously to trigger a five-year extension to its contract which will run from August 2017 to 2022.
The library service budget has been reduced by a further £200,000 for 2017/18 and year-on-year reductions means the library service budget is now 33% less than in 2010.
Suffolk Libraries is now looking ahead to the next five years and is starting a review to define how it can run a modern and affordable library service which meets the needs of the people of Suffolk. A new customer survey is being launched, asking people what they feel is important about the county’s library service, and there is also a new membership scheme giving people a new opportunity to support Suffolk Libraries.
Suffolk Libraries are running their customer survey until 8 May 2017. Complete the survey online or complete a paper copy, available from Lakenheath and all libraries.
With thanks to James Powell of Suffolk Libraries, who published the original version of this article HERE.

A gigantic congratulations to all the Oompa Loompa’s – I mean, FINISHERS – of the 2016 Summer Reading Challenge who came out to Lakenheath Library in the sweltering heat last night to receive their medals and certificates from Willy’s brother “Library Wonka” (AKA. our Library Manager Chris) at a very special Medal and Certificate ceremony held on Roald Dahl Day.
Chris was aided in the handing out of prizes by local Councillor Louise Marston, and six lucky winners were also awarded bonus Big Friendly Read prizes – tote bags and snazzy 3D glasses – for producing winning creative flag reviews, too. All of the submitted flags will be on display in the Library for the foreseeable future, as will the Roald Dahl trivia banners and quote flags, designed by F.O.LK.’s chairperson Mary to celebrate the special occasion.
If any finishers were unable to make the event, you can still collect your medal and certificate by popping along to Lakenheath Library in the coming days and weeks. Sadly we cannot guarantee Library Wonka will still be attendance!

This past weekend, Lakenheath Library and F.O.LK. joined in with the nationwide celebrations for the Queen’s 90th Birthday by decorating our front windows and hosting a Suffolk Libraries-branded stall as part of the Lakenheath Street Party!
As well as mixing with the local community in celebrating our Monarch, the pithy purple gazebo also helped to advertise the library to any newer residents, promote the upcoming Summer Reading Challenge by handing out B.F.R. (Big Friendly Read) postcard invitations and raise some money for the F.O.LK. charity fund.
I am delighted to report that F.O.LK.’s tombola made £107 and the sale of donated books and sweets (beautifully packaged by our creative chairperson, Mary) made a further £20.50, giving a total of £127.50 for the event. In addition to the monetary profit, it was also great to see such an increase of footfall into the library on the day, too. Since Sunday, we have signed up an additional SIX members who had previously never set foot inside, and recruited a new member to our monthly Top Time Book Club!
Thank you to those passionate members of F.O.LK. who worked so hard to make our stall a success, and to everyone who visited, chatted and enjoyed what we did – we look forward to seeing more of you in the library in the coming weeks and months.
